obituary, Lester H Brewster source not listed

Residents of the Osborne and Portis communities were shocked and deeply grieved when the news came last Thursday night of the parting of the Osborne's most beloved and highly esteemed citizen, Lester H Brewster, who passed away Thursday evening at his home on West Main Street, after an illness of only a few hours. It is hard to believe that Mr Brewster, who had been going about his work as superintendent of the Portis schools as usual this week, and who had been in and out of the business houses of Osborne as alert and friendly and deeply interested in life in general, meeting his friends with his friendly greeting and smile, was his mote.
"Lester H Brewster was born at Ada, Kans, Nov 18, 1889 and passed away at his home in Osborne on Jan 20, 1955. As a child he lived on a farm near Culver and Tescott, finally moving to a farm ? miles west of Salina, Kans in his early teens. Lester was a graduate of Salina high school and of Kansas Wesleyan University with the class of 1917. On July 1, 1918, he entered the service of his country in World War I, going to France as a member of the medical detachment of the 357th Field Artillery. He was a member of the American Legion and the V F W of Osborne.
"On Aug 24, 1919, he was united in marriage to Katherine Wessel of Bennington, Kans, and to this union one daughter, Beatrice was born. Lester took graduate work at the University of Denver, receiving his Master's Degree in Education in 1925. Additional work followed at the University of Chicago and at the University of Southern California. His early teaching experience was in Bennington and Simpson, and a mathematics tutor at Kansas Wesleyan. After his return from the service he spent four years as superintendent of school in Wilnona, Kans, four years at Plainville, Kans, followed by 20 years superintendent of the Osborne school.
"In the spring of 1947 Superintendent Brewster resigned his position in the Osborne schools due to ill health. In the following three years he struggled courageously to regain his health. In March 1950 he underwent brain surgery at Winter Veteran hospital, Topeka, Kans making an amazing and miraculous recovery.
"Four months later, he was hired as superintendent of the Portis school, where he was in his fifth year of service at the time of his death.
"Mr. Brewster was preceded in death by his parents, Mr and Mrs. J. W. Brewster, and is survived by Beatrice, at present of New York city, three sisters, Mr Mildred Muir of Salina, Kans, Mrs Gains Harrell of Morland, Kans, and Mrs A. F. Baker of Cairo, Kans.
"Memorial services were held t the Osborne Methodist church on Sunday, Jan 23, at 11:00 AM with Rev C. H Zimmerman officiating. Music was by the Methodist Chancel Choir with Leland Crapson directing and Mrs. Oliver Nuzum at the organ.
"Interment was in the Bennington cemetery, Bennington, Kansas"
