HANDBOOK OF THE KANSAS LEGISLATURE, 1895. Topeka, Kansas. Geo W. Crane and Co., 1894. (page 47)

RUFUS E. BALDWIN

"The Thirty-first senatorial district, which consists of Saline and Ottawa counties, is represented by Rufus E. Baldwin, of Ada, Ottawa county. He was born at Dover, Windham county, Vermont, and is now sixty years of age.

He received a good common-school and academic education, and engaged in teaching. In 1870 he removed to Kansas from Iowa, and, settling upon a farm, has followed agricultural pursuits since that time. Mr. Baldwin is married, and has one son and two daughters. In religion he is not connected with any denomination, and politically he was a Republican until he joined the Greenback party upon its organization. He then went into the Union Labor party, and upon the birth of the People's party was one of its earliest members. In 1892 his party nominated him for the Senate, and his candidacy was endorsed by the Democratic Central Committee of Saline county. He was elected by a plurality of 376 over the Republican candidate and a majority of 326 over all."
