United States Marine Corporal Joseph Earl Fite, of Round Rock, Texas, died Sunday, January 9, 2005, as result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was 23 years old.
He was assigned to the Marine Forces Reserves, 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Austin, Texas.
He was born on April 25, 1981, to Olin Cleveland Fite, III and Marcia Lynn Severson. He had two sisters and two brothers: Jennifer Brimberry, Sarah Fite, Thomas Fite and Michael Fite. His father said that, "He died with his boots on and his rifle in his hands, the honor that he has done my family is immeasurable." Cpl. Fite was a bicycling enthusiast and a huge fan of Lance Armstrong. He often wore the yellow "Livestrong" bracelet on his wrist. At his memorial service in Iraq, one of his fellow Marines spoke of how that Livestrong bracelet really represented Cpl. Fite because he "always lived strong."
