Martin, Carl A. Jr., 77 - of Atlantic City, passed away Wednesday, December 31, 2008.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA., Carl was the son of Carl and Gertrude (nee Schneider) Martin, Sr.
He joined the US Air Force in 1951 serving for 4 years during the Korean Conflict. Following his military discharge, Carl moved to Atlantic City. He joined and became very active in the local Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 215.
In Atlantic City, Carl initially worked as a Blue Schill Rolling Chair Operator from 1956-1971. He ultimately took employment with the Atlantic City Boardwalk Convention Hall working in the Security Department until retirement. Carl also worked in convention decorating and was an ice cream vendor on the ceach for 40 years. In 1965, Carl married Denise Kelso from Indiana. It was, however, while working in the Hall Security Department in 1982, that this caring gentleman was introduced to the struggles of the masses of unemployed steelworkers of Braddock, Pa. Carl, with his family, initiated a drive to collect food for the depleted food banks in Braddock, amounting to tons of food as well as clothing and toys for the families, continuing through 1986. For his unselfish and committed efforts toward the unemployed and starving residents of Braddock, Carl's untiring efforts were acknowledged in many east coast newspapers and by the United Steel Workers of America district in Braddock, PA. Locally, the City of Atlantic City initiated a proclamation naming Wednesday, June 2, 1983, Carl Martin Day. This Honor was likewise acknowledged by the House of Representatives of the State of PA. Carl was also a recipient of the Salvation Army Booth Award in 1985, presented by Miss America and was the first honoree of the Arthur Rann School Wall of Fame.
Carl is survived by his wife of 43 years, Denise, his son Sean R. Martin (Pepper), his daughter Leather W. Rokk (formerly Caren Martin), his sister Dorothy (Pat) Fleck and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Martin.
