Major, U.S. Army, WW II, European Theatre.
Major Maxwell served more than 22 years in the U.S. Army and received numerous awards and medals that included the Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, WW II Victory Medal, Bronze Star Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Silver Star, which was awarded for gallantry in action in France when he courageously moved 75 yards ahead of his entire Platoon to combat the enemy alone. Following the war, he was military governor of a providence in Germany.
Survivors include his wife, Colleen Dykes Maxwell; daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha & John McMullen of South Carolina, and Lynn & Jim Keen of Georgia; sister and brother-in-law, Sue & Titus Rodgers; grandchildren, Michael Washburn and his wife, Jamie, Brian Sadowski, Annie Sadowski, Steven Thomas, Kelly Wagner and her husband, Daniel; great-grandchildren, Michaela & Maxwell Washburn, Madison Bell & Meredith Lane Wager; several nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. & Bessie Hayes Maxwell; brother, Clyde Maxwell, and his first wife, Mae Louise Maxwell.
Interment with full military honors were conducted Tuesday, July 29, 2008.
