Statesboro - James Barney Averitt, 86, died Saturday at Bulloch Memorial Hospital in Statesboro after a long illness. The Statesboro native was a veteran of World War I and World War II and served as post commander of Fort Koobe in the Panama Canal Zone during World War II. He was retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel. He was president and a director of the Statesboro-Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce. He was honorary chairman of numerous community activities and was chairman of the Bulloch County Fair Association.
He was past president of Averitt Brothers Auto Co. and was a founding director of First Federal Savings and Loan Association, serving as executive officer of that institution for the past four decades. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Statesboro for 73 years, serving on the board of deacons.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jessie O. Averitt of Statesboro; two sons, Jack N. and David H. "Hal" Averitt, both of Statesboro, and four grandchildren.
Funeral: 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church of Statesboro, burial in Eastside Cemetery with full military honors. Smith-Tillman Mortuary of Statesboro.
