Professional Baseball Player. He was the first non-pitcher to wear eyeglasses during a major-league game. Even though he wore thick glasses, he was signed by the Syracuse Stars off the New York sandlots in 1921. The St. Louis Cardinals brought him up late in 1921 and he spent eight years with them as a utility infielder. His best season was 1922, when he hit .324 with 25 doubles in 116 games. He had a career batting average of .279. He was a minor-league manager and served in front-office capacities for various minor-league and major-league clubs over the years. He lost the sight in his left eye in 1948 because of a detached retina and then went toally blind in 1952. His autobiography, "Baseball From Backlots to Big League" describes his experiences. (bio by: Ron Coons)
