PIONEER SAN PIERRE CITIZEN PASSES ON

Robert Batzka, age 74 years, passed away at his home, three miles north of San Pierre, Sunday morning at 4 o'clock. Although ailing for several years, a heart attack suffered on Saturday afternoon caused his unexpected death.

Mr. Batzka was a pioneer settler in the San Pierre community. Although born in Germany, he came to America with his parents at the age of four. For six years the family resided in Chicago and then came to San Pierre, settling on the farm now belonging to Ernest Mueller. Later, the present home site and farm were bought and became his home until death.

He was a successful farmer and a good neighbor and friend to all with whom he came in contact. When health permitted, he was an active church member. His family were former members of the Zion Evangelical church here for a number of years, later transferring to the Methodist church at North Judson.

Surviving are his three sons; Fred at home, Arthur of Monticello and Walter of Valparaiso; and three daughters, Dora at home, Mrs. Ruth Douglas of San Pierre and Mrs. Lillian Hamay of Chicago;, seven grandchildren, one brother, Fred Batzka of San Pierre, three sisters: Theresa Reynolds, Lizzie Baske and Martha Waddell, all of California; also a number of other relatives and numerous friends. One brother preceded him in death at an early age.

Robert Batzka was born November 22, 1874 in Germany, the son of John and Amelia Batzka, reaching the age of 74 years, 20 days at the time of his demise, December 12, 1948.

On January 11, 1900, he was united in marriage to Huldha Kalinke, who preceded him in death in 1920. Six children were born to this union, all of whom survive.

Funeral services were held from the McCormick Mortuary at North Judson on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. J. A. Hornick of the North Judson Methodist church officiating. Interment was in the San Pierre cemetery.

"Come to my help, O Master! once in sorrow
My more than brother-King of Glory now;
Even in my tears a gleam of hope I borrow
From the deep scars around Thy radiant brow."
