S. M. Anderson enlisted on August 15, 1862, in Dale County, Alabama, for the war.
Pvt. S. M. Anderson was taken prisoner at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 2, 1863. He was confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland, on July 6, and sent to Fort Delaware, where he was received on July 6, 1863. He died of chronic diarrhea on April 6, 1864, as a Prisoner of War at Fort Delaware. He was buried on Jersey Shore opposite the post.
