Sam Duffield was a native of Northern Ireland. He came to the united States with his Grandmother, Brother William and younger ones in his family, names unknown. They settled in Garden City Minnesota and took up farming. In 1896 he married Jessie Howard in Amboy Minnesota. In 1910 they moved to the Fertile Prarie area near Baker to homestead. They had 3 children, Howard, Forrest, and Grace. They had a small farm where they raised milk cows, pigs, chickens and a few sheep. They would often board the local school teacher. One such school teacher was Laura Lym, who would marry Sam's nephew Charles Duffield in 1917. The family enjoyed dances and other activities at the Fertile Prarie Hall. Sam served on the school board of District 50. He donated a plot of land from their homestead to be used as a community cemetery. It would be named the Fertile Prairie Cemetery where he is intered with other relatives and neighbors.
