He studied at the University of Virginia. Enlisted April 21, 1861. Promoted sergeant 1861. Elected junior lieutenant April 19, 1862. Promoted first lieutenant and Aide-de-camp on Gen. W. N. Pendleton's staff, June, 1862. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Apr. 9, 1865. He then entered the Theological seminary of Virginia, at Alexandria, and was graduated in June, 1868. On May 30, 1878, he was consecrated bishop of West Virginia.
Missionary in Brazil and Puerto Rico. Married twice.
