Chaplain - 1st S.C. Hospital - CSA

He was five feet and ten inches tall, weighing one hundred and fifty pounds. Eminently fit with superb health. Animated and intellectual with an encyclopedic memory. He possessed a great vocabulary, always with the right word. His wife was Joyce Hathaway, from Edenton, North Carolina. They had a large family. His brethren and congregations were fond of him, he had a great social circle.

Son of Hiram L. and Emily E. Amiss, entered Methodist ministry in Virginia Conference in 1854; Confederate chaplain; a presiding elder for 25 years; married Joyce E. R. Hathaway, Edenton, N.C., Jan. 30, 1861; eleven children.

Virginian-Pilot & the Norfolk Landmark, Friday, September 1, 1916 - AMISS - At his residence, 1317 Llewellyn avenue, Wednesday, August 30, 1916 at 4:35 p.m., Rev. Joseph Henry Amiss, aged 82 years. Funeral services from the Colonial Avenue M. E. church, Friday, September 1 at 2 p.m. Friends of the family invited to attend. Interment Elmwood cemetery.

AMISS: Joseph Henry Amiss[1] was an appointed pastor for Warrenton 1852-53. Born Sep. 5, 1834, in Culpeper Co., he served as a Chaplain for C.S.A. 1st S.C. Hospital. He was admitted to Va. MECS Conf on trial in 1852, ordained a Deacon in full connection in 1856, and ordained an Elder in 1858. He preached under MECS/MC appointment a remarkable 57 years (1852-1907, 1909-11), superannuated (retired) in 1907, and died Aug. 30, 1916, in Norfolk (age 82). His other appointments were Rock Creek-Howard, Prince Edward, Wesley Chapel-Norfolk, Berlin, Edenton, Manchester, Edenton, Elizabeth City, Pasquotank, Sussex, Dorchester, Central-Portsmouth, Suffolk, Onancock, Hertford, Hertford-Edenton, and Gates; PE for Eastern Shore, for Danville, for Norfolk, for Portsmouth, for Rappahannock, and for Danville Districts (1884-1905); and Isle of Wight, Hampton Roads, and Bethel-Pine Beach. Son of Hiram Lorenza Dow and Emily E. Young Amiss, he married Joyce Elizabeth Rascoe Hathaway (1840-1914), Edenton, N.C., Jan. 30, 1861; they had eleven children. He was a C.S.A. Chaplain 1st S.C.
