Edmund joined the Powhatan Troop, Company E, of the Fourth Regiment of Virginia Cavalry on 10 July 1861 at Richmond. He was sent to Camp Pickens, where the City of Manassas is today. Beginning in 1862 he was detached for service with General Jeb Stuart. In March he was assigned to Major Powers, the brigade Quartermaster, on bounty duty. In November he was sent to Richmond to work at the Nitre Bureau.
