Col Jarret Norfleet Harrell

The son of John and Winnifred Harrell, he was raised by ex-Sheriff William B. Wynns. Jarret Norfleet Harrell was among the first from Hertford County to enlist in the Confederate Army. He enlisted on May 16, 1861. Joining the service as a Captain, he was soon promoted to the rank of Colonel. He is listed as Major 1st. Reg. in April 1862 and as Lt. Col. in July 1863. He was wounded at Chancellorsville on May 3rd, 1863. He surrendered at Appomattox. When the War ended, he returned to Murfreesboro where he and brother John W. Harrell revived their mercantile business and continued to prosper. He was Hertford County Commisioner from 1878 to 1890. He married first Susan Ruffin. After she died in 1856, he married Ellen O. Lawrence. He was characterized as frank, honest and positive in manner. He was tall, erect and large, a splendid looking man.
