Son of William and Maria Herbert. Wed to Alice Gregory Herbert.
17th Virginia Infantry - CSA
Born in the Carlyle House, he was raised in Loudoun County. He was a banker in Alexandria and Captain of the Alexandria Riflemen in 1858. He was appointed 1st Lt. of the Old Dominion Rifles in January of 1861. On 4/17/61 in Alexandria, he enlisted in the 17th Virginia Infantry and was Captain of Co. H. Elected Major on 4/27/62. Promoted to Lt. Col., 11/1/62. He was detached to command the 29th Regt. Va. Inf, in 1863. Appointed Colonel of the 17th Va. Inf. on 7/8/64. Paroled at Appomattox C. H. on 4/9/65. He was commanding Corse's Brigade. Postwar he returned to his of occupation of banking. A member of the R. E. Lee Camp No. 2, C. V., Alexandria. He was active in affairs of Episcopal Theological Seminary, Alexandria, and the Episcopal H. S.
