Educator, Citadel graduate 1861. Sams was assistant professor at The Arsenal Academy April 1862 - May 1865.
Sams describes the Citadel cadets firing on the Star of the West in "The First Shots." In "The Last Shots" he describes the Arsenal Academy cadets' role at Tulifinny and the firing on Gen. Stoneman's cavalry in Williamston.

He shares the stone with Emmie Roberts Sams.
