December 11-15, 1862.--Battle of Fredericksburg, Va.

"My especial thanks are due to Maj. J. R. C. Lewis for his cool and efficient co-operation in the execution of all orders. The left of our line of batteries was under his special supervision for the last two days."

The son of Lorenzo and Esther Maria Coxe Lewis. He married Maria Bradfute Freeland December 12, 1863. He served in the U.S. Navy until 1861 when he resigned to join the Confederate States Army.

He co-wrote: "Bluejackets with Perry in Japan; a day-by-day account kept by Master's Mate John R.C. Lewis and Cabin Boy William B. Allen". An acccount of an United States Naval expedition to Japan.
