Born at Edgefield, son of John Scott and Anne Cowherd Scott. He married Pamelia Augusta Graves on 10 Jan 1850.

Their home was Waverly, Orange County, Virginia.
He entered the Civil War at the outbreak of hostilities in 1861 as a Captain of the Gordonsville Grays, company C, 13th Virginia Infantry. In 1863 he resigned his commission since all his family were seriously ill with scarlet fever. Within a month he rejoined the army with Henshaw's Battery, and again rose to the rank of Captain. He was in a majority of the important battles of the war. At its close he held the rank of Major, Chief Quarter Master of Artillery of the 3rd Corps, Northern Army of Virginia. Some years before his death he sold his home Waverly and moved to Gordonsville.
