After a lingering illness, Mr. John E. Broaddus, one of he most prominent citizens of Henrico county, died yesterday morning, in the seventy-first year of his age. Mr. Broaddus had served his county in many capacities, and had been a staunch Democrat all his life. He numbered among his friends some of the best men in the county, by whom, he was held in the highest esteem.
Mr. Broaddus was a son of the Rev. Mordecai Broaddus, a Baptist preacher. He served throughout the war with distinction, and at his death was a member of the Lee Camp, Confederate Veterans, of this city.
Clerk of County.
For a number of years Mr. Broaddus was clerk of the county of Henrico, and after the county courts were abolished, under the new Constituition, he retired to his farm, near Glen Allen, where he passed the last few years of his life.
He was twice married-first, to Miss Bettie Gayle and then to Miss Mary Henry. His second wife survives him. By his first marriage he leaves two sons-Dr. W. E. Broaddus, a dentist of East Broad Street and Eugene Broaddus, a contractor, of Henrico county-and five daughters-Mrs. John King, of Henrico; Mrs. John Trevvet, Mrs. Arthur Trevvet, Mrs. H. M. Fleet and Miss Ella Broaddus. By his second wife he leaves one son, John Howard Broaddus.
The funeral will take place today, the services being conducted by the Rev. Dr. H. L. Quarles. The palbearers will be James R. Sheppard, Charles King, Henry M. Tyler, Dr. J. H.Winfrey, Ashton Schermerhorn, John C. Fletcher and Benjamin Gary.
