The son of Robert and Sarah Barbee Andrews married Mary Evelyn Minor on 18 January 1855 in Richmond. James served the Confederate Army with Company F of the Ninth Virginia Cavalry, the Essex Light Dragoons. He enlisted on 1 March 1863. Absent sick from July through October of 1864, he took the Oath of Allegiance in Bowling Green on 5 May 1865. James Andrews owned a 280 acre farm near White's Pond, between Liberty Forks and White's Mill. In 1941 the U.S. Government moved James Andrews grave from there to Greenlawn pursuant to the development of Fort A.P. Hill.
