After two months of illness from pneumonia and other ailments James L. Crawford, died at two o'clock Friday morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. Newton Farris of East Baker Street. Mr Crawford was born in Huron county, Ohio, April 6, 1829 and in a few years would have celebrated his 80th birthday. He has been a resident of this county for more than fifty years his wife dying here 23 years ago. Seven children survive, whose names are:
James, of Winchester; Retta, wife of Newton Farris, East Baker street; Alexander, of Jackson township; Samuel, Wabash county; Mattie, wife of Lou Hatfield, Rapid City, Michigan; Melvin, East High street, this city; Lena, wife of Charles Guy, of Rapid City, Michigan.
James S. Crawford, was born in Huron county, Ohio, April 6, 1829 and died March 20, 1908, aged 78 years, 11 months and 14 days.
He came to Jay county at the age of 19, was married to Clara Houck at the age of 21. To this union were born 10 children, four girls and six boys.
The mother, one girl and two boys have preceded him to the better land.
He leaves seven children, eighteen grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren.
He united with and was baptized at the Christian Church at La Fountaine about seven years ago and remained faithful and a consistent member to the end. He gave evidence during his last sickness by expressing himself as ready and willing to go. He was a member of the G. A. R. Post at La Fountaine, having served in the war of '61.
James is buried in the Green Park Cemetery, in Portland, Jay Co., Indiana. His tombstone only lists the 12th Regiment Indiana Infantry Co., A.
His tombstone is a small,simple, upright, white headstone used by the military in the late 1800's
The description of James from the Military records vary alot. Both records has his age as being 34, and that he was a farmer, but one record says he was 5' 10" and the other says 6'. One has his complection as being dark the other fair. One has brown hair and the other black. And last but not least one has his eyes as being gray and the other blue.
