MERRIFIELD - Roland "Andy" Anderson, age 84, of Merrifield, passed away Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at St. Cloud Hospital. A memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Crosslake. Friends and relatives are invited to gather at the church beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Private family interment with military honors will be Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley.

Andy was born on April 5, 1925, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Ernst and Hilda Anderson.

After attending high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corps serving his country as a navigator/bombardier doing weather recon flights. Following his active duty he entered the Rolla School of Mines and Metallurgy for one year, and then he transferred to the University of Minnesota where he earned his degree in electrical engineering.

On June 1, 1948, he was united in marriage to Leola Katzmarek at the Catholic Church in Harding. Andy worked for Eastman Kodak for two years in Rochester, N.Y. Returning to Minnesota he was employed by Univac, now known as Unisys, until his retirement in 1984. From 1973-1975 the couple lived in Bad Holmburg, Germany. In the late 1980s the couple moved permanently to their home on Horseshoe Lake. For more than 30 years they wintered in Florida and Arizona.

Andy was a member of Immaculate Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, IEEE and the American Legion Post No. 500. Among the things he enjoyed were silversmithing, fixing antique clocks, making stained glass, fishing, playing poker and spending special time with his granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernst and Hilda; brother, Rodney; and beloved grandson, Brandon.

Andy will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Kitty; son, Doug Anderson and his wife, Jan, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and granddaughter, Jessica Anderson, of Waconia, Minn.
