Professor Emil Menger

Age: 76 yrs. 6 mos. 24 dys.

Professor of Music and German at Hillman College in Clinton, Mississippi.

Cause of Death: Yellow Fever.

Obituary, Vicksburg [MS] Evening Post, 5 Oct 1897, pg. 4:

Death of Prof. E. Menger.

A telegram this morning from Clinton, Miss., announces the death of Prof. E. Menger, at his home there, at 7 o’clock last evening in the 75th year of his age. This venerable gentleman has been a resident of Clinton for the past 45 years, maintaining a continuous connection of 44 years with the famous Hillman College, of Clinton, in charge of its musical departmen[t]. His hundreds of pupils in this and adjoining States, have spread his fame as an accurate, competent and patient teacher, and a kindly, genial gentleman, who year after year endeared himself to the hearts of all with whom he came in contact.

He leaves six children, all worthy representatives, to mourn and revere his memory, three sons and three daughters, most of whom have reached the age of maturity and have made other homes for themselves. They are Mr. Will Menger, of this city; Mr. M. L. Menger, of Clinton; Mr. Louis Menger, of the John Hopkins University, Baltimore; Mrs. E. H. W[h]arton, Clinton; Mrs. M. L. Watkins, Crystal Springs, and Mrs. B. T. Hobbs, Brookhaven, Miss.

The funeral takes place this evening at 5 o’clock in Clinton. One of the distressing results of the present quarantine situation[*] is that it prevents the assemblage of the different scattered members of the family to pay due respect and reverence at the funeral of their honored father.

In his demise at a ripe old age he has entered into rest, having ably filled the duties of this life as a good citizen, a loving husband and a kind exemplary father, leaving a cherished memory with a host of friends who join in sincerest sympathy to the bereaved members of the family and relatives.
