Maretta Blanche Sheets, one of three children of Lawrence and Ora Viola (Trobaugh) Cook, was born December 14, 1908, near Clay Center, Nebraska, and passed away Saturday, February 4, 1995, at Brodstone Memorial Nuckolls County Hospital in Superior, Nebraska, at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 21 days.
Maretta was educated at the West Buffalo Rural School near Fairfield, Nebraska, and graduated from Fairfield High School with the Class of 1928. She taught school in Clay County for one year.
June 4, 1930, in Nelson, Nebraska, Maretta and Gordon Sheets were married. During her married life, she worked in the County Superintendent's Office for two years and she served as City Clerk of Nelson for several years. She spent most of her time as a housewife taking care of her husband, Gordon.
At the time of her death, she was a member of Nelson Community United Church of Christ. Maretta was a good worked and active with the Church Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Nelson Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, serving as a past Worthy Matron.
Maretta will be remembered by her friendliness, her crocheting and her love of flowers and gardening. She will also be remembered for her good cooking and baking and supplying the neighborhood kids with freshly baked cookies.
Preceding her in death were her parents and one sister, Georgia Zikmund.
Survivors include her husband, Gordon of Nelson; on brother, Myrl Cook and his wife Helen, of Fairfield, Nebraska; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 7, 1995, at 11 a.m. from the Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, Nebraska, with Rev. Royce Buchtel officiating. Music was provided by soloist, Debi Garrison, singing In the Garden and How Great Thou Art with Carlita Price as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were Gary Whitley, Bill Meyer, John Ensign, Robert Byrkit, Floyd Zikmund and Gary Culbertson. Burial was in Nelson Cemetery. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson, Nebraska, was in charge of arrangements.
