James Richard Carns

Services for James Richard Carns, 69, Tyler, will be held on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home with the Rev. David Dykes officiating.

Burial will follow in Cathedral in the Pines in Tyler under the direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home.

Mr. Carns passed away on Jan. 26, 2009, in Tyler.

Mr. Carns was born on Oct. 11, 1939, in Coffeyville, Kan., to his parents, Gail Carns and Mildred "Mickey" Wilbanks.

He was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler. Mr. Carns graduated from Tyler High in 1958, graduated from East Texas State University in 1970 and from Dallas Institute of Funeral Services in 1990. He was a market manager with Brookshire Grocery Company and currently worked for the USDA as a meat inspector.

Mr. Carns is survived by his wife, Lavonne Carns; sons, Sam Carns and wife Sonya of Immokalee, Fla., Rick Carns and wife BJ of Tyler, Ross Carns of Tyler, and Darrell Kellam of Flint; daughters, Rebecca Pitts and husband Stephen of Tyler, and Dana Popkie and husband Joe of Flint. Grandchildren include Christopher Carns, Samantha Carns, Jack Carns, Austin Carns, Matthew Carns, Cameron Carns, Leigh Ann Smithart, Hallie Pitts, Candice Lewis, Carley Popkie and Preston Popkie. Siblings include brothers, Ron Carns of Boerne, and Larry Carns of Bullard; and sister, Janet Featherston and husband Jack of Bullard.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Pitts, Darrell Kellam, David Craft, Tim Pitts, Keith Ellis and Steve Carns.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Nick, Robert Patino, and Jim Gunn.
