John was born in Davidson, North Carolina to John C and Catherine (Bowers) Clodfelter, moved to Putnam County, Indiana while young. Married Millia Jane Smith 18 Dec 1849 in Russell, Putnum, Indiana. Between 1857 and 1860, they moved to Mercer County, Missouri. John died in the Civil War at the Jefferson Barracks(then called Benton Barracks) due to illness. Was in Co C, 35th regiment Missouri infantry as a private. John and Milly had 7 children: Joseph Putnam(1850-1939)married Mildred Ballew, David Crockett(1852-1930)married Dora Elizabeth Branaum, Solomon(1854-1913)married Luvina Goodale, James William(1855-1935)married Malvina Esther Kirk, Alexander Bower(1857-1929)married Mary Jane Vanderpool, Almarinda E(1860-1893)never married, and Clarinda M(1862-1944)married John Alvin Denslow.

The Clodfelter name came from the original name of Glattfelder. The Glattfelders immigrated from Glattfelden, Zurich, Switzerland 1742-1743. It is known that John's Great Grandfather Johannes Peter Glattfelder died while at sea. But it is unclear when his Great Grandmother, Salomea (Amberg) Glattfelder died. She may have also died at sea, or shortly after arrival to the U.S. John's Grandfather, Johannes Rudolf was age 12 when he arrived here in 1743. He died in 1810 in Davidson, North Carolina.

John and Milly were my GGG Grandparents.
