Stephen G. Brown enlisted as a private for three years of service on 11 August 1862 in East Bend Township, Champaign County, Illinois. He mustered in Company F, 125th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry on 3 September 1862. Private Brown was discharged for disability on 20 March 1864. According to his enlistment record, he was single, a farmer, age 23, born in Bean Blossom Township, Monroe County, Indiana, and resident in East Bend Township. He was 5 feet, 8 inches tall, had blue eyes, dark hair, and dark complexion.

Stephen Brown, age 11, was enumerated in 1850 in the household of parents, Lee and Rachel Kerr Brown, in Washington Township, Monroe County, Indiana. Stephen G. Brown was enumerated in 1860 in Bean Blossom Township, Monroe County: he was age 21, a farmer, with real estate worth $2,000, and personal property worth $160. He was enumerated as S. G. Brown in East Bend Township in the 1865 Illinois state census. He died the following year, presumably in the same location. His veterans' headstone card is the only known record showing his date of death.
