Stephen Stephenson, age 10, was enumerated in 1850 in the household of his parents, Martin and Mary F. Stephenson, in Adams Township, Decatur County, Indiana. He was enumerated in 1860 as a 21-year-old farm laborer in the household of his parents in Champaign County, Illinois; Township 22 North, Range 8 East (which became East Bend Township in 1861).
Stephen G. Stephenson enlisted as a private for 3 years service on 7 August 1862 in East Bend Township, and on 3 September mustered in Company F, 125th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. According to his enlistment papers he was single, age 23, born in Warren County, Pennsylvania, and was a farmer in East Bend Township. He was 5 feet, 7 inches tall, had blue eyes, a light complexion, and light hair.
Private Stephenson's regiment fought in a dozen engagements, including the Battle of Chickamauga, Tennessee (19-20 September 1863), the bloodiest battle of the Civil War after Gettysburg. Private Stephenson was mustered out with his regiment on 9 June 1865 in Washington, D.C.
Stephen Stephenson and Miss Sarah E. Tucker were married on 29 January 1866 in Champaign County, Illinois (license dated 25 January); the couple had nine children. He farmed in East Bend Township until after 1900, and retired to the village of Fisher.
Note: The spelling of the family name changed from Stephenson to Stevenson around 1880.
