Longtime resident of Prineville, Oregon Esther Lee Manning, passed away on January 30, 2011, with family by her side.
Esther was born on October 5, 1930, in Mesa, Ariz. to Ezra J. Nelson and Gertrude Alpha (Bartee) Nelson.
As a child, the family lived in Liberty, Utah and later moved to Ogden, Utah where Esther attended Ogden High School.
In 1947, Esther married Neil Rodgers and had two children. She later divorced and in 1952, Esther married Floyd Horace Manning. They were married in Ogden, Utah. They lived in North Ogden, Utah until 1958, when they moved to Liberty, Utah.
In 1970, they moved to Dietrich, Idaho, and then later, Buhl, Idaho. During that time, Esther and Floyd raised a family and ran a dairy farm. In 1983, they moved to Prineville. During her time in Prineville, Esther ran an adult foster home, Manning's Juniper Retreat. Later on, she and her family grew and exported shiitake mushrooms.
Esther loved animals and over the years she raised poodles, schnauzers, Persian cats, rabbits, parakeets, and cockatiels. She was rarely without a pet dog or cat and in the last years of her life, she was very close to her beagle, Bella.
Esther also loved playing the organ and keyboard, crocheting, and other arts and crafts, genealogy, taking photographs and making home movies, reading mysteries and fantasy/science fiction, and watching movies and television.
Esther is survived by her sons, Larry Manning and his wife Sonya of Redmond, and Chad Manning and his wife, Michele of Dufur, Oregon; daughters, Dixie Bailey and her husband Brad of Glendale, Arizona, Christine Haley of Prineville, Jeannine Arredondo and her husband Carlos of Twin Falls, Idaho, and JoDeen Ridgway and her husband Glenn of Prineville; sister, MaDonna Richards of Kailua Kona, Hawaii; 23 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Manning, her parents, five brothers, two sisters, a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter.
Arrangements are in the care of Autumn Funeral Home of Redmond.
