Sept. 22, 1923 - July 14, 2011 - Resident of Newcastle Place, former longtime resident of Bayside in the home he designed and built with many unique personal touches. Beloved husband for 59 years of the late Joan L. Eschweiler (nee Grootemaat). Loving father of James(Heidi) Eschweiler and Judith (Charles Kleinberg) Eschweiler. Proud grandfather of Kristen Eschweiler and Wendy Kleinberg. Dear brother of Thomas L. Eschweiler and Peter Q. Eschweiler. Preceded in death by brothers Alexander C.. Eschweiler III and John A. Eschweiler. Special uncle to all nieces and nephews. Further survived by other relatives and many good friends. Bob was a faithful member of Milwaukee University School class of 1941 and attended Stanford University before enlisting in the service. He proudly served his country as a P47 Thunderbolt fighter pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. during WWII. Bob flew 57 tactical and ground support missions in 138 combat hours out of Louvain, Belgium, Venlo, Holland and Lippstadt, Germany. Bob also served as an air-ground controller while with the Second Armored Division directing fighter-bombers down on specific tactical targets in the Cologne area. He was awarded the Air Medal with 8 oak leaf clusters and Presidential Unit Citation. Bob served for 26 years as a loan officer, corporate officer and director with A.L. Grootemaat & Sons, a Milwaukee mortgage and insurance firm. He left in 1974 to open Security Unit Corporation, a real estate development firm constructing personal storage warehouses. Upon retiring, Bob and his wife Joan enjoyed traveling to P-47 and Beechcraft Bonanza conventions, as well as trips all over the world. Bob was a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Milwaukee reaching the impressive milestone of 50 years of consecutive perfect attendance, the highest attendance record of anyone in the club. He and his wife Joan were founding members of North Shore Congregational Church and original residents of Newcastle Place. Bob always liked to stay active, he enjoyed tennis, golf and water sports. In the 1960's Bob resumed flying as a private pilot and flew his family on vacation trips all over the country. He had a true love for music of all kinds and always had a piano which he could play by ear. His children would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Debra Smith for the incomparable care given to their father and all their love to Dottie Mestier and her family. Dottie was the best friend and travel companion that any man could ever have. A Memorial Service honoring Bob's life will be held on Thursday, July 21, at 3:00 PM at North Shore Congregational Church, 7330 North Santa Monica Blvd., Fox Point. Family will greet friends following the service. Interment at Forest Home Cemetery will be private for the family.
