Death: Aug. 24, 1980

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Athboy, County Meath, Ireland, he served as a Lieutenant in Lord Strathcona's Horse, Royal Canadians. On March 27, 1917, in an attack on the village of Guyencourt, France, German soldiers opened fire at very close range on Lieutenant Harvey's leading troop as it advanced, causing heavy casualties. Lieutenant Harvey ran forward well ahead of his men, jumped the barbed wire protecting the enemy position, shot the machine gunner and captured the gun. He later received the Military Cross for his part in the Strathconas charge against German positions near the Moreuil Woods on March 30, 1918 and for distinguished service at Guyencourt, France, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Remaining in the Lord Strathcona's Horse, Royal Canadians, he was promoted Captain in 1923 and then served as the instructor in Physical Training at the Royal Militay College of Canada. In 1938, he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel, commanding officer of Lord Strathcona's Horse and retired a Brigadier General and commander of the 13th Alberta Military District in 1939. He died at age 91 in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
