Major League Baseball Player. The right-handed hitter made his big-league debut with the St. Louis Browns in 1935. The next season the first baseman-outfielder batted .344 with 212 hits, including 40 doubles and 12 triples. Bell then led the American League with 218 hits and 51 doubles in 1937 while batting .340. He tailed off to .262 in 1938 and then on May 13, 1939 was dealt to the Detroit Tigers along with Bobo Newsom, Red Kress and Jim Walkup in exchange for Vern Kennedy, Chet Laabs, Mark Christman and three other players. The Tigers traded him to Cleveland on Jan. 20, 1940 for Bruce Campbell. Bell completed his career with the Indians in 1941, compiling a .292 lifetime average. (bio by: Ron Coons)
