Ira O. Beaty, the father of actress Shirley MacLaine and actor-director Warren Beatty, died last week at a Baltimore hospital, his family said yesterday. He was 83. Mr. Beaty, an educator and retired Arlington County real estate agent, died of an undisclosed illness Wednesday. His death was not announced until after a private funeral and burial Monday, Beatty said yesterday from his parents' Arlington home. Mr. Beaty, a former Richmonder, had lived primarily in Arlington since January 1945, when he became principal of Thomas Jefferson High School. During his career, he also served as principal of Waverly High School in Waverly and Westhampton High School in Richmond. Among his achievements was a special commendation in 1982 from Johns Hopkins University for his service as a teacher and administrator. Mr. Beaty also was known in Richmond as a jazz musician and bandleader.
He was born January 18, 1903, in Front Royal, Virginia He graduated from Front Royal High School in 1919 and earned his bachelor's degree at Randolph-Macon College in 1926. He held a doctorate in psychology and philosophy from Johns Hopkins. His famous children were born in Richmond. Shirley MacLaine, 52, has devoted as much time to writing books in recent years as she has acting. On Sunday and Monday, she starred in 'Out on a Limb,' a five-hour ABC miniseries based on her autobiographical best seller. Ms. MacLaine won the Academy Award for best actress in 1983 for 'Terms of Endearment.' Warren Beatty, 48, has become best known for his productions of such films as 'Reds,' in which he starred, produced and directed, winning the 1981 Academy Award for best director.
A private funeral for their father was conducted in Arlington on Monday. He was buried in Columbia Gardens cemetery there. Also surviving is his wife of 55 years, Kathlyn MacLean Beaty.
