Civil War Veteran
John T. Bryson, a farmer, was mustered into service 7 Sept. 1861 at the age of 21 at Camp Butler. He served in Company A,34th Illinois Infantry. His residence was Erie/Sterling, Whiteside county, Illinois. He re-enlisted 23 December 1863 in Chattanooga Tenn. His rank was Private (veteran). He was mustered in on January 3, 1864. He was at Shiloh, Siege of Corrinth, Clayville, Ky., Lavergne, Truine, Tenn. Stone River, Liberty Gap, Mission Ridge , March to the Sea, Siege of Savannah, and Campaign of the Carolinas. He was mustered out 12 July 1865 in Louisville. His rank at that time was Sergeant.
At the age of 63 years, 3 months and 13 days John T. Bryson passed away at the Clarinda hospital Tuesday evening at eight o'clock, and the funeral will be held from the residence in this city Friday forenoon at ten o'clock. Deceased was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, was married to Miss Margaret Ann Lane at Roxabell, Ohio, January 26, 1871, and they at once settled on a farm southwest of Villisca. To them was born a sonó Fred, who resides at Bozeman, Montana. The wife and mother died May 2, 1896. Married Katie Bolt in 1898. That marriage lasted a year. On March 6, 1901, Mr. Bryson was married to Mrs. Alice R. Stewart Greenlee, who survives him and who has the sympathy of many friends in her bereavement. Deceased was one of the "boys in blue" being a member of Company A, 34th Illinois regiment, and served four years. He had been a member of the M. E. church since 1861 and was a man of good standing in the community.
