William was the son of William Marshall Copeland and Mary "Polly" (Means) Copeland. He was the third husband of Amanda Elizabeth (Dunaway) Benson Stonebraker Copeland (1827-1901). They were married on June 21, 1877 in Page County, Iowa. William was married previously to Rosannah (Baker) Copeland (1823-1876) on May 15, 1843 in Shelby County, Indiana. William and Rosannah had at least six children together including: William Marshall, Sarah Missouri (Copeland) Woods, George, Alice (Copeland) McCulloch, Charles H. and Aberrilloh "Abie" Copeland. William was a Veteran of the Union Army in the Civil War. He served with Co. K, 25th Missouri Infantry and Co. C, 13th Missouri Infantry.
