Nathan was the son of Leonard Brown and Sophia Beason.

Nathan was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted as a Private on 12 Aug 1864 at the age of 18. Mustered in Co A 1st Battalion Nebraska Cavalry on 7 Oct 1864. Transferred out of Co A 1st Battalion and transferred in Co A 1st Nebraska Cavalry on 10 Jul 1865. Mustered out on 1 Jul 1866.

He married Sarah Ellen Burrows in 1868 in Fremont County, Iowa. They had eleven children.

Nathan died in 1901 at the age of 55 years.
