Samuel was born in Vermont, as was his wife, Laura Bean. They married in Vermont abt 1837. Laura and Samuel had 4 children: Marcia E, John B (who died at the age of 6 in VT), Laura M, and Frank P.

By 1860 the family was living in Beloit, Wisconsin. Samuel was a constable. When the Civil War broke out, Samuel enlisted in Co G 6th Wisconsin Infantry as a Private on 10 May 1861. He transferred on 10 May 1861 to Co S 5th Wisconsin Infantry. He was promoted to Full Principal Musician on 1 Jul 1861. Samuel received a disability discharge on 7 Jun 1862.

By 1870, Laura and son Frank had moved to Fremont Co, IA and were living with daughter Marcia, who had married Charles Danforth. Samuel was still in Beloit, WI. By 1880 Samuel and Laura were both living in Hamburg, Fremont Co, IA; Samuel was a farmer.

Samuel's wife, Laura, died in 1898 at the age of 84 years. Samuel moved in with his daughter Marcia and husband Charles Danforth. Samuel died in 1903 at the age of 89 years.
