Thomas Jefferson Armantrout was the son of Eli Armantrout of Ohio and Eliza Taylor of Kentucky.
In response to President Lincoln's call for 75,000 volunteers, the 10th IN INF organized at Indianapolis as a three-months regiment. Thomas enlisted 25 Apr 1861 Co C and was a musician. The regiment went to Virginia and participated in the Western VA Campaign, fighting at the Battle of Rich Mountain on 11 Jul. They returned to Indiana and mustered out of service 6 Aug 1861.
Thomas re-enlisted as a Captain on 6 Mar 1865 in Co I 150th Indiana Infantry at the age of 24. The regiment mustered out 5 Aug 1865 at Jordan's Spring, VA.
Thomas Jefferson, or J.T., came to Iowa in 1868. He was the editor of the Fremont Times in Hamburg and participated in the Republican State Convention in 1876.
