Scientist. The son of architect Alexandre-Theodore Brongniart. Born and educated in Paris, he maintained wide-ranging interests in the sciences throughout his life. He made important discoveries in the use of fossils to date scientific information and was the first to develop a system for classifying reptiles. But his principal fame rests on his pioneering work in ceramics. As director of the famed Sevres porcelain factory from 1800 until his death, he laid the foundations of ceramic chemistry, which he summarized in his book "Treatise On the Arts of Ceramics and Pottery" (1844). From 1822 he was also professor of mineralogy at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. He was the father of noted botanist Alexandre Theodore Brongniart.
