Gideon was the son of Fountain and Jane Roberts Rothwell. He married Lucy Pendleton on June 30, 1872 in Garrard County. They were the parents of, at least, eleven children. Around 1899, Gideon was thrown from a horse and the injury to his leg was so severe that an amputation was necessary to save his life. He rallied from this and lived ten more years.
Obit: Mr. Gideon B. Rothwell, near Cartersville, died Wednesday from a complication of diseases. The burial took place Thursday at Manse. The deceased was 73 years of age, and well known and highly respected in the community. He was a brother of S.D. Rothwell and a father of Mrs. Chas. Baierlein of this city.

Note: Mrs. Rothwell's maiden was Pendleton on her marriage record and the birth record of one of their children. Two of her children's DCs list the surname as Pennington. Her given name has been butchered in records and was recorded as Lousiba, Lucybe, Luciby, Luciba, Sib, Siby and Loucill.
