Curtis was the son of Franklin and Margaret Campbell Pierce. He married Emily Simpson on May 26, 1859 in Garrard County. They were the parents of two small children when the Civil War broke out. Curtis enlisted as a PVT in Co H, 7th Ky Vol Cav, Union. He was promoted to 1SGT and served in that capacity until the end of the war.
After being mustered out, he returned to Garrard County and reunited with his family. Curtis and Emily were blessed with five more children. Mr. Simpson supported his family by farming his own land.
