Chris Frakes,36, of Savannah, Mo. worked as a flight paramedic for LifeNet and Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo. He and three other people, including a patient, were killed in a helicopter crash.
The crash occurred around 7 p.m. on 144th Street and Cameron Road, just east of Kearney, Mo., and north of Clay County's Midwest National Air Center. The helicopter had flown from the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo. to Bethany to pick up the patient. The helicoptor was en route to Liberty and had intended to stop at an airport in Mosby for fuel.
Chris had worked as a flight paramedic for eleven years. He was a graduate of Union Star High School and Grand River Tech School. He was a Fire Medic in Chillicothe, Mo., for three years and a paramedic at Heartland in addition to working for LifeNet Air Medical Services. Chris assisted Randy Bever in teaching EMS and fire training.
Chris' joys in life were softball, his family, and his work with his Heartland and LifeNet families.
In his 11 years of experience, Chris gave his all to comfort those in need and he saved countless lives. He performed his duty by choice, knowing it had risk, but he bravely took to the sky in order to save lives. He died a true hero, and his sacrifice will not be forgotten.
He will be greatly missed.
He was the son of David Dale Frakes and Jovita Lynn (Abels) Wertenberger.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Bringle Frakes; step father, Stacey Wertenberger; grandparents, Richard and Blondina Abels. Survivors: his mother, Jovita Wertenberger, Union Star; his fiancée, Amber Gust, Savannah; his father, David Frakes (Kathleen), St. Joseph; his brothers: Billy Gillespie, St. Joseph; and Derrick Gillespie (Shandar), Independence; sisters: Bobbie Morgan, King City; Sammy Gillip (Terry), Helena; and Rayanne Robertson (Mark), St. Joseph; children, Chloe Frakes, Madison Cowman, Shelby Milbourn, and Baylee Thogmartin; grandmother, Alverta Frakes; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins
Services were held at the Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory and the Word of Life Church.
