Daniel Jr was the son of Daniel and Martha (Brown) Lucas and was born on the family farm near Conquest, Cayuga County, New York about 1802. He had eight brothers and sisters: William, Andrew, Margaret, Elmena, Caroline, Amanda (my great great grandmother), Archibald and Eleanor. Little is known about Daniel's childhood, but it is known that he married a woman named Charlotte Courtright. The couple had twelve children, eleven of which have been identified: Eleanor C., Harwood, Martha A., Augusta, Malina, Andrew, Winfield Scott, Thomas Jefferson, William, Fanny and Daniel, Jr. The U S Census of 1860 records that Daniel was living in Conquest, Cayuga County, New York. He was listed as being fifty-eight years of age and his occupation was listed as a carpenter. Living a home was his wife Charlotte (48, housekeeper), Eleanor C. (25, tailoress), Martha (18, housework), Winfield (13), T. J. (10), Alamena? (8), William C. (7) and Margaret (5). Three other children were listed on the Conquest census but living with other families: Andrew M. (15, farm laborer, living with Horace Chaffin and family), Augusta (17, domestic, living with Cortland Waller and family) and Melina (16, domestic, living with George Carr and family). In 1870 the census records that Daniel was still living in Cayuga County but was listed as farming with an estimated real estate value of $500. At home a woman by the name of Harriett (56, keeping house) was listed under his name. As to why Charlotte was not mentioned as his wife living in the home has not been determined or if this Harriett was Daniel's second wife. Three children were living at home: Martha (30, single), Fannie (18) and William (19). Also listed in the Cayuga County census was their son Jefferson Lucas (22, living with Sylverter Willson and family). Daniel Lucas is said to have died October 14, 1877 near Conquest (Cato post office), Cayuga County, New York. A number of the Lucas clan are interred in the Conquest Village Cemetery and althought not confirmed he is also buried here. In the 1880 census Charlotte is recorded as living with their son Winfield S (a carpenter), daughter Martha A. and a nephew named Clarence. One report indicates that Charlotte was buried April 27, 1892, again most likely at Conquest Village Cemetery. Martha in her old age lived with her aunt Eleanor (Lucas) Marshall and her husband. Daniel and Charlotte's daughters Martha and Augusta, and sons Andrew and Winfield Scott never married.
