Josiah was the son of Michael and Ruth Kern Minnich. During the Civil War, Josiah served with Co. A, 16th U.S. Infantry. He was married 3 times, first to Elizabeth Deibler, second to Rebecca Johns, and third to Ellen Maurer.

The son of Michael & Ruth or Rosa (per death certificate) Ann (Kern) Minnich, he married Elizabeth Deibler and fathered Aaron (b. 04/12/60). In 1860, he was a carpenter living in Halifax Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with brown hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted with the regular army in Harrisburg February 25, 1864, and assigned to Co. A, 16th U.S. Infantry. He honorably discharged at term's end July 23, 1867, at the rank of sergeant.

Elizabeth died in 1871, and he married Rebecca Johns, fathering Amos Franklin (b. 11/27/69), Joseph Osceola (09/17/71 - Sp-Am War), Claude Eugene (b. 03/26/75), Edward Austin (b. 02/12/77), and Anton Blaine (b. 06/21/84). Rebecca died in 1885, and he married Ellen Maurer, fathering Robert Henry Heilner (b. 05/29/91). Cause of death is listed as an "intestinal obstruction" of four days duration.
