Ralph Baird

Ralph "Doc" Baird, 87, 1937 S. Maple St., died at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke's Nursing Center after a sudden illness.

Mr. Baird was born Dec. 6, 1898, north of Jasper. He moved to Carthage in May, 1922.

He joined Fred Darrow at Darrow Motor Co., becoming manager and a partner in 1931. He bought the Darrow interest in 1937, changing the name to Baird Motor Co., now C & C Ford, which he operated until Aug. 16, 1960. He later was employed at the Bank of Carthage in the business development department.

He served as a trustee of McCune-Brooks Hospital, was a director of Carthage Chamber of Commerece, board member and president of Jasper County Association for Social Services Inc. which operated Fair Acres and Elmhurst nursing homes, and a member of Fraternal Lodge No. 14, Knights of Pythias.

He was married June 13, 1927, at Fort Scott, Ks., to Emily Gilmore. She died Aug. 17, 1982.

Survivors include two nieces Mrs. Betty Smith, Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Marianne Bensing Marshall, Hickory, N.C.; four nephews Raymond Baird, 2036 Forest Dr., Kenneth Baird, Kansas City, J.C. Baird Jr., St. Joseph, and Bill Baird, Denver.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Park Cemetery. The Rev. Frank A. Hodson will officiate.

Friends may call Friday morning at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children's Transportation Fund in care of The Knell Mortuary.

Ralph W. "Doc" Baird

Graveside serices for Ralph W. "Doc" Baird, who died Tuesday, were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Park Cemetery.

The Rev. Frank A. Hodson officiated.

Honorary pallbearers were Walter French, Dave Flanigan, Garold Fullerton, and C. Max Hahnen.

Active pallbearers were Scott Campbell, Scott Campbell Jr., Richard Campbell, James R. Spradling, L.H. Flanigan and George Flanigan.

Services were under direction of The Knell Mortuary.
