Hospital Steward James L. Hastings Hospital Steward James L. Hastings was born in DeKalb, St. Lawrence county, New York, in 1834, removed to Illinois, and enlisted from Mason City. He was chosen sergeant of Company C at the organization of the company, and at the formation of the regiment he was appointed hospital steward, serving in that capacity until the close of the war, and was mustered out with the regiment. He returned to Mason City at the close of his service, and was engaged in farming for many years. He served as postmaster under the Harrison administration, but soon after the close of his term, removed to Chicago, where he was engaged in real estate and insurance until his death, which occurred in 1899.
Company C was enrolled by Samuel Black, a farmer residing near Mason City, between July 23 and August 15, 1862, the entire company, except two – one from Logan and one from Peoria – enlisting from Mason county. At the organization of the company the following commissioned officers were elected: Samuel Black, captain; George A. Blanchard, first lieutenant, and Dr. William W. Walker, second lieutenant. Of the 102 officers and men originally mustered in 8 were killed in action, 7 died of wounds, and 14 were hit whose wounds did not prove fatal while in the service, 22 died of disease, 24 were discharged for disability, 7 were transferred, 2 officers resigned and 31 officers and men were mustered out with the regiment. The company bore well its part, and did its full share in making history of the regiment one of which its members may be justly proud. ********* Younger Brother Daniel also served in the 85th ******* 1850 United States Federal Census Name: James L Hastings Age: 15 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1835 Birth Place: New York Gender: Male Home in 1850: Connersville, Fayette, Indiana Family Number: 95 Household Members: Lorenzo Hastings 44 Jane Hastings 46 Lucy Hastings 18 George E Hastings 17 James L Hastings 15 Sarah J Hastings 11 Daniel W Hastings
