Josephine Lavinia Gilchrist

•Josephine Lavinia Gilchrist was born in June 1850 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama.
•She married Franklin Rush Barrett, son of James Howard Barrett and Elizabeth W. Parks, on 7 December 1871 in Coosa County, Alabama.
•Franklin Rush Barrett and Josephine Lavinia Gilchrist appeared in the US federal census of 15 April 1910 in Axtell, McLennan County, Texas.
•Josephine Lavinia Gilchrist became a widow at the 22 June 1910 death of her husband.
•Josephine Lavinia Gilchrist died on 24 October 1919 at age 69.
• Mrs. Josephine Lavinia Barrett applied in August 1911 for a Confederate widow's pension, citing husband's service with Company B, 34th Alabama Infantry Regiment, CSA. The approval process dragged on until 1916. Also in the file, in addition to dozens of pages of correspondence related to the pension, is a short letter from their son William Wood Barrett to the Pension Commissioner in Austin informing him of Josie Barrett's death on 24 October 1919.

In 1862 he enlisted in the 34th Alabama Infantry. He was captured at the Battle
of Chickamauga and taken to Camp Douglas, IL, and kept as a prisoner until June,
1865.
After the war he returned to AL and in 1868 began the study of medicine under
Dr. E.B. Wood of Marble Valley. Two years later he attended lectures at Atlanta
Medical College and then practiced in Marble Valley until 1871 when he moved to
Athens, TX.
In 1874 he moved to Hubbard City, then Mexia and in 1887 came to McLennan
County, settling 6 miles east of Waco.
