John Philip David was a 26 year old resident of Savannah, Georgia. He was an Air Corps gunner during World War II. He was a son of French immigrants and a native of Long Island, N.Y. He went to Atlanta to prepare to enroll at Georgia Tech in 1947 and was staying at the Winecoff Hotel on December 7, 1946 when it caught fire in the worst hotel fire in U.S. history.
