David L. Brewton born on Oct. 11, 1845 was the youngest child of Nathan Jackson Brewton Jr. and Nancy Miller. The Brewton family were large landowners in Bulloch County and are descended from John Bruton, a Revolutionary Soldier from GA who died in 1790 in North Carolina. Nathan Brewton's family appear in the Ware Census as early as 1850. Nathan had 4 sons who served in the War. Only one , Henry Brewton , survived. Nathan Brewton III died early in the War in 1861, the other James W. Brewton died in Virginia in 1864. David Brewton enlisted into Co. "B" , GA 50th Infantry on June 1, 1862 at the early age of 17. He was wounded at First Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, and captured 6 days later at Fort Stedman, VA. He was in the hospital at Frederick, MD until Nov. 1863. Records show that he was transferred to Winder Hospital in VA . From there he was transferred to Jackson Hospital in VA and released March 22, 1864. Pvt Brewton was captured a second time at Stones Mountain, MD on March 28, 1865 and transferred to City Point ( Grant's Headquarters) and held there until the end of the War. After taking the oath, he was released on June 24, 1865. Pvt. David L. Brewton entered the War hardly more than a boy. Three years later he came home , wounded, scarred but a hero. He married Lula Pittman on May 14, 1867, and one year later on May 27, 1868 their only child Lillia Brewton was born.

David Brewton died a little more than a year later on August 30, 1869, most likely as a result of battle wounds and disease. We do not know when his Military Marker was placed here at Hephzibah, neither do we know why it was placed where it is , surrounded by 4 of his Confederate fellowmen.
