Elliot Edgar Cavin, Sr., 85, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007, at his home in of Centreville, Miss.
Visitation at Centreville Baptist Church, Centreville, until service, conducted by Dr. Dennis Johnsey. Burial in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Mr. Cavin was born Aug. 30, 1922, in Wilkinson County, Miss., the son of Herschel Leonard and Lora Hastings Cavin. Preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Patricia Cavin Allen; and four brothers, Lynn, Glynn, Maxwell and Charles Cavin.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 2nd Armored Division under Gen. George Patton and the 9th Air Force in France. He was a longtime member of Centreville Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and director of the Sunday school. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, served for two terms on the Farm Bureau Board and also on the Centreville Academy School Board. He had a love for the land which included farming, raising cattle and horses. He belonged to the Mississippi Cattlemen Association and the American Quarter Horse Association.
He enjoyed being with his family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and being called "Taw Taw" by his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Pauline "Polly" Craft Cavin; two daughters, Melanie Aldridge and husband Dale, and Georgia Messer and husband Conrad; son, Elliot E. "Speedy" Cavin Jr. and wife Becky; two sisters, Vera "Billie" Gordy and Martha Cavin; six grandchildren, Joey Allen and wife Jennifer, Cavin Allen and wife Melissa, Amanda Aldridge, Lauren Cavin, Nathan Messer and Tanner Cavin; and great-grandchildren, Lily and Davin Allen and Cole and Jay Allen.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Centreville Baptist Church Building Fund or a charity of choice.
